APPLE, PEAR SALES
Dissatisfaction With Board (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 2. The latest statement of the Apple and Pear Marketing Board that the plan to sell to certain organisations at a discount was in the consumers’ interest showed to what depths the board would go, said Mr H. L. Clark, chairman of the Auckland Committee of Retailers today. Mr Clark said the answer by Mr J. H. Parker, the board’s chairman, to the criticism of fruit retailers throughout the country was “one of the weakest that could possibly be made by a man in his position.” For years Mr Parker had told the public, and had tried to impress that Government, that his board was watching consumer interests, Mr Clark said. ‘The consumer would be better off if the board left apples and pears in this country alone,” said Mr Clark. The board was the costliest middleman there was. The board’s record had left a trail of dissatisfaction behind for years. Even now suppliers in Auckland and elsewhere were unhappy with its ways.
