RACING SUMMER MEETING AT GREYMOUTH
Mosul And Korallion Favoured
Mosul and Korallion, which are both South Canterbury-trained, might be the successful combination for the on-course double at Omoto today. This double will be run on the Novice Stakes No. 1 and the Brunner Hack Handicap on the first day of the Greymouth Jockey Club’s summer meeting.
Mosul, a Khurdistan-Brigg Fair filly, is trained for Mr W. A. Grant, of Fairlie, by M. R. Jones at Washdyke. The Novice Stakes No. 1 will be her second race as a three-year-old. Her first was the Roslyn Trial Stakes No. 1 at Invercargill a fortnight ago. In that race she made the pace but was run down in the last furlong of six t>y three more seasoned rivals. The benefit she would derive from that run—-her first for more.than a year—should enable her to manage five and ahalf furlongs successfully around the turns at Omoto. Riccarton stables will put three runners into the field and two of them, Llantana and Mirene, are expected to provide Mosul’s strongest opposition.
Llantana’s latest form on testing tracks in Canterbury has not been strong but she shaped well on a campaign at Westport in October. There she tried for all-the-way wins over six furlongs 1 twide and was fun • down in the
last few strides each time. She lost first by a neck to Sigurd on the first day and was third, a nose and a neck behind Munster King and Appreciation, at her second attempt. Mirene had her first race since April in the Eiffelton Stakes at Ashburton yesterday week. She confirmed some solid gallops in her recent track.trials when she made ground near the end for fifth. Outstanding Record Korallion, a member of the successful Orari team of L. H. Pratt, will be trying to improve an outstanding record on the West Coast
this season in the Brunner Hack Handicap. He was one of the star hack sprinters at the Westport and Reef ton meetings in October. He contested five races on that circuit, was runner-up to the very smart Le Cheval twice and won at each of his other three starts. Korallion has to master the top-weight of 9-3 today but one of hi’s .best runs should be adequate to give him ■ victor}’. ; .. .. > ■ Awatere, from Blenheim, misht be Korailion's strongest rival. She .failed twice in strong hack fields at the New Zealand Cup meeting at Riccarton last month but showed brilliant speed.at her pre-' vious attempt in the Brackenfield Hack Handicap, seven furlongs, at Motukarara. In that race she was out in the lead by five lengths on the home turn and still fought on resolutely for third after being headed by Gabelle and Legal Game inside the last furlong. A- comparable i-'tin -on the turning Omoto track ; would be hard to match. The best of the others could’ be Lady Reka. a minor placegetter in each of her two starts at Westport in October. Main Double The main double will be run on the Hannan Memorial Handicap, the - principal race, and the Ahaura Hack Handicap. Raysnar, Gaytana, London Tower, King Lyn and Asoka will’ probably be the most solidly backed runners in the first leg which has attracted a capacity field. Fair Summer,, one of two reserves. was scratched for this race, on Thursday but Gold Raid still awaited re-entry to the field late yesterday. Pyrites. Arc Flight and Slatey are a favoured trio for the Ahaura Hack Handicap in which Silver Coral and Heathcliff, both, dual acceptors, are still on the list of reserves. There Were some light showers in Greymouth on Thursday but the' weather has been mainly fine and the track was reported to be in excellent order yesterday.
