ROTTING RUSTIC LAD FOR NEW BRIGHTON
Likely Prospect In Main Sprint Event
Rustic Lad-should gain his second win for the season in the North Beach Handicap, the main sprint race at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s summer meeting today. Rustic Lad was a stylish winner over 10 furlongs on New Zealand Cup day and he paced fine races for fifth and sixth at two subsequent appearances at the meeting.
Rustic Lad, a four year-old by Flying Song, has created a good impression in his racing so far this season and should develop high-class winning form in the next few months. The track was easy when he won the Hawera Cup last season and the conditions expected today should not trouble him.
, Johnny Guitar was twice splaced at the cup meeting, suggesting that he is close, to win,mng form. He was third to Sealfield Lad and Blue Prince at his .most recent start, an effort •superior to those of most of his Arania is one of the class horses 4n this field. She will not be set an easy task from 12 yards in a big field, but she usually begins safely, which should enable her to take up a reasonably handy position in the first two furlongs. Arania is eligible for the Auckland Cup at the end of the month and this race wifi form part of her preparation for that event. Teryman was a stylish winner over two miles on the middle day of the cup meeting and -showed speed to finish eighth over 10 furlongs on the final day. He is expected to win several races in the next few months and should be capable of a bold showing.
Great Dillon, Highland Don and Jonboy Star should do best of the other horses on the front, while -Aldora, Reason Why, and Spaxton will be possibilities from 12 yards. The track conditions could be a deciding factor in assessing prospects for the Rawhiti Handicap'-®® ,'tnain race for trottors. . .rJFiammetta's' two second placrngs at the -cup meeting en-title-fief fo serious consideration. She has shown marked improvement in recent weeks and her efforts at Addington showed that she was on the verge of winning form. Sound Placings Storm.. Lord also raced consistently at Addington for two thirds and a fourth. : The Royal Windsor ..gelding started from awkward marks at Addington and
will begin from 48 yards today. However, if he trots as well as he did at Addington, he should be close to the money. Court Out is due to have her first start since January, but after a bold showing at the Methven -trials, she will, be in demand. She looks more solid now than earlier in her career and if she can handle the track, she should be hard to beat-
Winterlight has a fine record this season, having won at his last two starts. He -looked on the burly side when worked at New Brighton on Tuesday and might need a race. If forward enough, he should be too good for most in the race.
Ahuma-i: which will be making a fresh start, showed promise last season when she raced most consistently. The Light Brigade mare could easily upset calculations.
Our Jimmy, a winner at Oamaru in October, Dark Lorene, When, Dianthus Girl, and Resistor are others capable of adding interest to the finish. The double will be run on the President’s Handicap and the New Brighton Handicap. Samantha, Diamond Hanover, and Highland Heath form a likely trio for the first leg, in which Mulgrove. ■ Seafield Lad, Spring Chat. Bonny Starlet, and Pretoria Bob also show to advantage. Kingsdown Patch looks the likely favourite for the second leg. Most opposition might come from Young Dieman. Peebles. Kerry Queen, and Euchre. Heavy, rain on Thursday and again yesterday morning gave the New Brighton track a thorough soaking. There was some drying yesterday afternoon, but the track is still expected to be on the soft side.
