MANUSCRIPTS OF COOK
£58,000 To Keep In Commonwealth
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE-, December 1. It will cost £58.000 to keep the Captain Cook log and manuscripts within the Commonwealth, according to the London correspondent of the Melbourne “Herald.” This would be the £53,000 paid for them at Christie’s for an American buyer, plus £5OOO commission. Australia and New Zealand had hoped to get them for £50,000. A cable has now gone to Canberra putting the position in the event of the Britisl Government refusing an export licence to America, said the newspaper. To find ’ the £58,00C might require contributions jointly by Britain. Australia, and New’ Zealand. Australia was not likely to pay that much for the log and manuscripts, whi-h were not in Captain Cook's '~wn hand, and dealt mainly with New Zealand and the regions surrounding it.
