Town Hall Site
Sir.—The City Council has an unenviable reputation for vacillation when dealing with important civic amenities. Recently, after several undignified changes -of mind, it finally ’ decided to widen Colombo street. Now, in siting the town hall, instead of being guided by the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Institute of -Architects and their own Regional Planner, some councillors seem ready to wash their hands and leave the decision to the uninterested, the woolly-minded, and the prejudiced. With the factors involved it is almost as foolish to expect the public to determine a site for the town hall as to rely on them to design it. City councillors are expected to seek the best advice available and act upon it. No courage is necessary. The only courage involved occurs when, having proved too weak to carry out their duty, they present themselves for re-election.—Yours, etc., W. A. SUTTON. December 1, 1960.
