BOWLS Club Competitions On Heavy Greens

The overnight rain made the greens heavy for the Christchurch Bowling Centre’s inter-dub competitions for the Three Fours and Robinson Shield, which were decided in the morning. Play on the Riccarton Racecourse green wes not possible. Games against the Christchurch club scheduled to be played on this green had to be transferred to the Christchurch green. By the tame the Manning Cup games were due to begin in the afternoon the greens had dried out considerably but were not running freely. The heavy greens found many players wanting after the exceptionally fast greens that had been experienced on the two previous Saturdays. Before play began in the Manning Cup fixture the Fendalton club held a commanding lead over Shirley with Elmwood close up, third. Papanui, St. Martins, and Spreydon followed in that order with little separating them. Positions changed remarkably at the end of games on Saturday. Spreydon, which was sixth, had a good win over the Woolston W.M.C. winning, all the games played. This gave Spreydon the maximum pointe to put it two points ahead of Fendalton. Fendalton is second, but before Satl- - games it was leading Spreydon by 17 points. Shirley is third, down one place. St. Martins improved to go ahead of Papanui, and St. Albans, which was seventh, also went ahead of Papanui. The six leading clubs are Spreydon 1, Fendalton 2, Shirley 3, Elmwood 4, St. Martins 5, and St. Albans 6. Papanui has dropped from fourth to seventh. In section A of the Three Fours competition, • South Brighton was leading Barrington by one point before play began on Saturday. The result of Saturday’s games reversed the position and Barrington has gone into the lead one point ahead of South Brighton. Christchurch was another club which improved its position to come up from fifth to third. The positions in this section are: Barrington 1, South Brighton 2, Christchurch 3, Sydenham 4, Fendalton 5. St. Albans is still in command in section B. St. Albans has not yet been beaten but lost a % point from a draw. Opawa improved from fourth to equal second with Christchurch.
