Athletics TOC H TEAM BREAKS JUNIOR RELAY RECORD BY 2.1SEC

A Canterbury record, by a Toe H junior relay team, and several other excellent performances at the weekly inter-club athletic meeting at Rugby Park on Saturday were ail indications that a number of competitors are nearing top form and some outstanding achievements can be expected soon. Running virtually without competition throughout the pace a Toe H team of M. Wells, D. Warren, D. Joyce, and D. Solomon set a new Canterbury junior record of 3min 35 9sec for the four by 440 yards relay. This beait the existing record of 3min 38sec set by a Technical team two seasons ago. Toe H gained an early lead over Christ’s College and won by more than 7sec. In addition to being a member of the Toe H relay team, Walls gained three other first places in the under 17 A grade, winning the 220 yards in 24sec, the 220 yards hurdles in 27.8 sec, and the long jump with 19ft 6in. The time of the University team in the senior four by 220 yards relay indicates that some senior sprint relay records may be in danger before the end of the season. R. Burgess, D. Mackenzie, B, Kerr, and D. Davidson missed the record of Irnin 29.9 sec, set by another University teem in 1959, by Isec. Junior Two Miles Canterbury has established a remarkable record in junior distance running in New Zealand in the last four years with four representatives winning the national two-mile title, and now the province has another athlete who may score the fifth successive victory. This is a Rangiora athlete, A. Dyer, who on Saturday won the two miles in 9min 37.45ec. After being back in the field in the earlier stages, Dyer overtook the Canterbury junior harrier champion, A. Bayard, and sustained a pace the others could not match towards the finish. The secondary schools’ 880 yards champion, P- J. Hewlett (Christ’s College), was in good form to record his best time and break 2min for the firet time. He was timed at Imin 59.8 sec, compared with the secondary school record of 2min o.2sec. Pole Vault In his first competition of the season, C. Stricke (University) was within Sin of his Canterbury senior and junior records in the pole vault. Recently returned from Otago University, Stricke cleared 12ft in the senior pole vault. Making his first appearance at Rugby Park this season, the Canterbury long jump champion, A. O’Sullivan (Ashburton), was only Itlin short of championship performance when he cleared 21ft lOV.in, giving him the second best distance this season, %in behind J. Chadderton (Technical). An encouraging 10.2 sec was recorded by the University sprinter, D. Mackenzie, into • head wind and the former Canterbury champion 440 yards record-holder, B. Kerr, showed a welcome return to form with a 50.4 sec quartermile. An outstanding effort in the women’s events was that of Miss L. Anderson, in the high jump. She cleared sft 4in, only one inch short of her Canterbury record made in January, 1959. She won also the 80 metres hurdles in 12 9 sec, and was second in the 100 yards to Miss M. A. M. Chamberlain, who was timed at H.6sec. Later in the day, Miss Chamberlain, a former holder of the world 440 yards record, ran very strongly over this distance in 56.35ec, compared with her provincial record of 54.55ec, made at the national championships last March.
