TARANAKI OIL DRILLING
Round-The-Clock Shifts (Neto Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, Nov. 27. Full-scale drilling for oil in Taranaki is now averaging depths of 600 feet a day at Tikorangi. near Waitara. Today the drill was down 1700 feet. Round-the-clock shifts are being worked by drilling gangs under the giant Venezuelan derrick that was brought to New Zealand especially for this work. Each shift is averaging depths of 200 feet. The drilling progress is now considered to be “as good as could be expected,” the drilling superintendent for Shell-BP.-Todd.Oil Services (Mr P. J. Johansen) said today. A-number of relatively inexperienced men were delaying progress a little. The present rate of drilling, however, is a change from frustrating delays that were experienced earlier this month soon after drilling was begun and a porous sand zone near the surface was struck. The trouble was overcome by building a cement to hold out the sand from clogging the drilling bit.
