U.S. SECRETARY OF AGRICULTURE

Mr Benson Arrives On Short Visit

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 23.

Mr E. T. Benson, Secretary of Agriculture in the outgoing United States Republican Administration, arrived at Auckland today by air for talks with New Zealand farmers and Government leaders. He will also have discussions with Mormon Church leaders here. He is one of the 12 apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. His main aim is to sell more American surplus farm products here. But he told reporters at Whenuapai airport: “We are also prepared to buy. There is considerable opportunity for New Zealand to increase her lamb exports to the United States.” After eight turbulent years in office, Mr Benson will relinquish his post early next year when the Kennedy Administration takes over.

His visit is part of a “farewell-to-office” trip around Pacific countries—without the power to enter Into firm commitments.

Mr Benson was met by the Minister of Labour (Mr Hackett) and other officials. While in New Zealand—he will leave Wellington on Saturday— Mr Benson will visit farm research units.
