MR NASH’S HOUSE CATCHES FIRE
One Room Damaged
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 21. Fire damaged one room at the Prime Minister’s residence in Pipitea street, Wellington, shortly before noon today. Mr Nash was presiding at a Cabinet meeting in Parliament Buildings at the time but Mrs Nash was home. The blaze was confined to a livingroom in the front downstairs of the official residence. Firemen used bucket pumps to put out the fire which started in a wall. Afterwards they used axes to smash the plaster wall open to make sure the fire was out. The brigade had only 30 yards to come from the Murphy street station.
A large crowd thronged the entrance to the brick house and the police kept an avenue clear for the firemen. As the firemen worked, Mrs Nash retired to a back room to wait for the Prime Minister to arrive.
The Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Holloway) arrived at the Prime Minister’s home about 15 minutes after the alarm was given and Mr Nash came shortly afterwards in a Ministerial car.
