BOY JAMMED IN CULVERT

Subsidence Caused By Rail-Car (New Zealand Press Association) WHANGAREI, November 21. When a rail-car caused a culvert running under the railway line a mile north of Towal to sink, Roger Thompson, aged 13, of Hallidays road, Tikipunga, was jammed in the pipe for one hour on Saturday afternoon before being freed by a dozen men. While Roger was stuck in the culvert a goods train was halted, the line cleared, and then the train crew helped to extricate the "prisoner.” Around 4 p.m. the men’s feverish efforts were rewarded. Mr Bob Shelton, Roger’s companion, said: “He came out like a rabbit.” The boy was examined by a doctor, found unharmed, and driven home. Mr Shelton, of Whangarei. was examining the culvert with Roger in preparation for concreting work by a contracting firm.
