CINEMA AUDIENCE STARTLED
Truck Tears Door Off Hinges (New Zealand Press Association) HASTINGS, November 21. Loud crashes at the {jack of the State Theatre, Hastings, during the late afternoon session on Saturday startled the audience. A few dozen persons left the theatre but most of these returned when they discovered that nothing serious had happened.
The disturbance was caused when a truck driving along the lane behind the theatre struck a back door which had swung open. The door was ripped off its hinges and flung into the tunnel-like passage leading into the back of the theatre. The noisce reverberated in the tunnel and magnified the effect.
The audience was alarmed when someone shouted “Fire.” But, with quick presence of mind, a man in the stalls said sternly “Sit down,” and quietened the crowd. The manager (Mr J. Baxter) said today that house lights had been put on and the ushers moved among the audience, explaining what had happened and reassuring the people. The operator (Mr J. Murtagh) continued screening the film, the English comedy “Please Turn Oyer.”
