Studio Runs Soundly In Solo Mile

A solid solo mile by Studio, a very smart seven furlongs by Herbs and a brilliant half-mile by Safe Harbour marked the gallops by Ashburton candidates at Riccarton yesterday.

Both the plough and the trial , grass were available for fast work and the latter track, which most trainers preferred to use, provided lightning footing.

Without being bustled Studio [A. J. Stokes) did exceptionally

Swell to run a mile in Imin 42 M-ssec. He hit out freely all the pvay and quickened slightly over <he final half in 50sec. In spite of a solid campaign at «he New Zealand Cup meeting, jwhich included a win in the WaiJnairi High-weight and a close •«econd in the Otaio Plate, he is plenty of condition. He •avill contest the Longbeach HighJnveight at Ashburton. X Packwood (W. Beck) completed •his second round of strong work Jbn the plough by running home rfrcxn the seven furlongs in Imin JB5 2-ssec. His last three furlongs 4osec.

*■ Packwood, a minor placebetter in the Waimairi High•fweight at the New Zealand Cup Jneeting, was a winner in similar at Ashburton in September. His programme at Ashburton this week has been left ropen. He is an acceptor for the Jhieh-weight and the hack mile. > Tamarisk (R. W. Gould) and ■sjlalla (J. Leach) were together throughout their seven furlongs •on the plough in Imin 31sec, the Jast three in 38 I-ssec. « Tamarisk is one of the Tinwald •Handicap light-weights. His will compete against Fthe hack milers in the Chatmos JJlandicap at Ashburton. Brydone (P. J. Kempton) and •Palrannach (A. J. Stokes) led Stradbroke (R. W. Gould) by ■dour lengths after six furlongs Jon the plough in Imin 16 2-ssec. •Stradbroke started in a similar hgap behind the other two and «was to have drawn un on the top jbend but he found the task beyond him when the pace was Stepped-up over the last three Jfurlongs in 37sec. • Herbs <O. Anning) took Imin ;30 2-ssec for seven furlongs but <he would probably have bettered 'that time had he not been eased Jun going to the half-mile where shabbier <K. Reggett) joined in. dashed home from there in •47 3-ssec and Herbs held a slight all the way down the and increased it to half >a length at the post.

Herbs’ race form has not been olid but it was still an encouriging trial for his engagement at tshburton. Gabbler does not usudlv put much zest into his track fallons.

> Quite Able (A. H. Eastwood) fwas not required to work faster than three-quarter pace for the “first five of nine furlongs but he X?-an the last half-mile solidly in •50 2-ssec. His time for the last “mile was Imin 49sec. Quite Able Xwill be the only representative 'of C. G. Humphries’ stable in the Handicap. ' Made Pace

Explain (K. Reggett) made most of the pace and still led her stablemate Kalimna (O. Ann„ing) by a length after running smartly over half a mile in 48 2-ssec.

Explain will have solid backing in the Rakaia Two-vear-old Handicap on Friday. Kalimna. a three-year-dld Persian GulfHome Port filly, win make her

race debut in the Eiffelton Handicap.

Detail (K. Reggett) ran in from the half-mile in 49 4-ssec. He will contest the November Stakes at Ashburton. Abu El Saad (B. S. Finlayson) and Swinton Hugh (A. J. Stokes) ran their first three furlongs in 40 1-ssec and completed seven in Imin 33 2-ssec. Abu El Saad was doing best a furlong out and led by three-parts of a length at the post. She was a surprise winner in maiden class at Motukarara last month and will be tried against the hack milers at Ashburton.

Search Warrant (N. T. Cowles) was under a good hold a neck ahead of his stablemate Gambol (K Reggett) after running seven furlongs in Imin 33 2-ssec, the last half-mile in 50 3-ssec. Search Warrant’s race form this season has been weak but his run yesterday was encouraging for he had much the worse of the weights. William David Ballochburn (W. Hanlin) led William David (G. Baldwin) by two lengths after the first two of six furlongs in 27sec but the latter closed quickly on his stablemate early in the run home, ran the distance out solidly in Imin 17 2-ssec. and was three narts of a length ahead at the finish. ) Thumper (W. Beck) was shading Last Link (A. J. Stokes) at the end of a mile on the plough in Imin 47sec. The early sectional times were 13 4-ssec for the first furlong, 26 l-ssec for the fi rst two and Imin 8 4-ssec for th«> first five. Thumner. which will have his first te=t in on en company in the Tinwald Handicap. worked keenly but was under restraint for the first half-mile. Last Link is a form runner for the Longbeach High-weight Handicap. Delaware (O. Anning) left half a mile behind in 48 4-ssec but he was under a bustling ride in the straight to stay alongside his stablemate Zetland Leieh (K. Reggett), which joined in for the last three furlones.

Safe Harbour (K. Regeett) sped home from the half-mile in 47 3-5 sec. She did not have much weight up but it was an outstanding run just the same. . The hack sorint will h° her mission at Ashburton on Friday. Waikato (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, November 21. The double on the second day of the Waikato Racing Club’s meeting at Te Rapa on Friday will be on the Waikato Gold Cup and the Kirikiriroa Handicap.
