Matyas Seiber Dead

Matyas Seiber, British composer, teacher, conductor, ’cellist and musicologist, died,in a motorcar accident in South Africa on September 24. Of Hungarian origin, he was born in Budapest in 1905, and he had been a pupil both of Zoltan Kodaly and of Adolf Schiffer. His musical career was as full as it was varied, and his versatility expressed itself both in the music of the dance band and in more serious work. His serious composition is marked by the greatest integrity, his later works being written in the 12-tone technique.

The British Council recording of his Elegy for Viola and Strings and the James Joyce Fragments from “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” has just been released.
