Big Increase In
Acreage
The Department of Agriculture reports an increase in the acreage of potatoes entered for certification in the 1960-61 season. Applications from , growers cover an area of 9400 acres, compared with 7848 acres last season.
According to the Potato Board's newsletter the largest area entered is from Canterbury where there has been an increase of 1360 acres. The Otago-Southland area has increased from 420 acres to 515 acres and the North Island total area has lifted from 117 acres to 214 acres. The entries cover 27 different varieties, which include the recent releases from the Crop Research Division—Tahi and Rua—and two recently imported Dutch varieties—Ari and Sientje. Aucklander Short Top again heads the list with 2163 acres entered for certification, followed closely by 2145 for Sebago. The rest in order are: Ham Hardy 1151. Chippewa 847, Aucklander Short Top (Virus Y free selection) 566. Katahdin 425, Arran Banner 403, Dakota 396, King Edward 216. Arran Chief 143. Epicure 115, Red King Edward 102. and other varieties (14) 399.
Biggest increases in acreage have occurred in Aucklander Short Top (Virus Y free selection), Sebago, Aucklander Short Top. Ham Hardy and Glen Ham. Cliffs Kidney has decreased.
