NEW PAPER IN LONDON
From Ashes Of “Chronicle”
LONDON. November 21. A newspaper was born today —the “Phoenix.” It is a tabloidsized single folded sheet and will sell at 3d.
The “Phoenix” js published by the action committee of the Liberal “News Chronicle” which was closed down recently. It said editorially—there is no news in it today—that the paper would cost £lm to float and would have an initial circulation of 200.000, eventually rising to 1.000.000.
The “Phoenix” did not look to multi-millionaires to back it.
“Primarily it is hoped to raise the bulk of the money from a dozen or so individuals,” is said. “It is also hoped to raise a large sum from the public.” The editorial said the paper would “provide a bold platform for all shades of radical, and in particular, left-of-centre opinion.” It would “respect the reader’s intelligence.” and be against' “humbug, stunts* hysteria and conformity.” Today’s inside pages were blank.
Bronze Age Find.— Remains of a Bronze Age settlement have been discovered in an orchard at Karcag in eastern Hungary. Full excavation of the settlement will begin next spring.
