THREE-STOREY BARRACKS

Start At Burnham Next Year

The Army hopes to make a start on the building of the first of the proposed new three-storey barrack blocks at Burnham military camp next year, according to the Quartermaster-General (Brigadier R. B. Dawson) who visited Christchurch on Monday. He said that Government approval had been given for the preparation of a basic plan for new barrack blocks at all military camps. “We want permanent accommodation blocks capable of housing about 150 troops, which will not be expensive to maintain and repair like the old style wooden barracks 'that were built during the war.” "These blocks would be the same at every camp. The only difference would be in foundation materials.

“At present we have not got Government approval to build, but estimates of the cost, and foundation testing is now being carried out. We hope to start on the first block next year at Burnham.” said Brigadier Dawson.

Another job which would probably start in 1961 was the erection of a workshops building large enough to repair and maintain all of the Army vehicles operating through the Burnham camp. It will replace the existing workshops which are now in shocking condition,” he said. Most of the equipment for the new shops was already in use at Burnham and would only require transferring to the new building.
