TOTALISATOR RETURNS

Record Season In U.K. Likely

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, November 18. Totalisator figures in Britain for 1960, with another six weeks of the season to go, look like being a record of about £3O million—possibly at the expense of bookmakers. Last year was a record, with an annual aggregate of nearly £28,450,000. At the end of last week, the aggregate for this year was just over £28.211,000. “The Times’’ racing correspondent says the figures point to the steady encroachment of the totalisator on a bigger portion of betting held by bookmakers. No total was available for betting with bookmakers, but it seemed probable that it was not increasing. Most of those betting on courses were doing much less business than a few years ago. The correspondent of the “Dally Telegraph” says that while the totalisator is steadily gaining ground, on-course bookmakers report some fall-off in business. Figures over the whole betting range during the last National Hunt season showed that the totalisator more ,often than not beat the bookmakers’ starting price in the proportion of 57 per cent, to 40 per cent.
