PEOPLE IN THE PLAY
Through the transfer of E. Sansom to Wairakei, the University Hockey Club has lost the services of a very useful forward who has also been a very loyal and capable club administrator during his years at the university. Although Sansom’s stickwork was not outstanding, he was a most energetic inside-left whose back-tackling was relentless, and his speed, quickness and thrust in the circle and great courage often produced some remarkable match-winning goals in closely contested struggles. His play was always characterised by intelligence in the application of sound tactical principles, and his selection in the 1960 New Zealand Universities team which defeated Australian Universities in Christchurch was a fitting reward for steady improvement over several seasons. * * *
There will be several changes in the West-Christ-church University senior
cricket team for today’s fourth round match against Sydenham, P. P, W. Morris and M. Beban ■will be absent and the team will be furher fseriousi y weakened by the withdrawal, for
personal reasons, of G. N. Gearry. Geary has made over 5000 runs and taken 215 wickets in the senior competition. Possibly the most entertaining batsman in Christchurch when at his best, he has provided Hagley Oval regulars with many hours of pleasure with his forceful methods. He will play again
After only a few dub games in the Auckland competitions K. N. Farman rose to promin-
ence as captain of the Auckland represen t a t i v e side which brought the Plunket Shield back to Auckland in the 1958-59 season. This season, however, he has faded into
obscurity and
has not been included in the 24 man practice squad from which the Auckland Plunket Shield team will be selected. Another player of note who has been at least temporarily discarded is the former New Zealand batsman D. D. Taylor, whose form has not been impressive this season. * * * The Eastern Suburbs in'siderigfit, John Wrathall, has been voted by Auckland soccer players as sportsman of the year for 1959-60. Wrathall, who is a New Zealand soccer representative, now holds the Sportsman Trophy, presented by the Auckland Soccer Supporters’ Club. * * * Two of the Dominion’s top surfers have been included in the New Zealand University team which is to tour Australia early in the new year. They are J. Sneyd (Eastern United), of Auckland, who was a member of the 1956 New Zealand surf team, and A. McPhail (Sumner), of Christchurch, who was the junior national surf race champion in 1958. Unfortunately for their clubs, both swimmers will probably miss the national surf championships to be held at Warrington, Otago, next February.
