Government Subsidy Approved

The Prime Minister (Mr Nash), as Minister of Maori Affairs, yesterday announced Government approval for r £ for £ subsidy on a new laundry and storage block at the Rehua Maori Apprentices’ Hostel, which will cost a total of £2200. So far the 30 to 50 boys in residence have been restricted to two tubs in an old building. The new one will include a modern laundry, drying room, garage, grocery store, vegetable store, bobby workshop, and toilet block. Immediately advice of this approval was received, boys at the hostel set to work to pour the foundations, materials having been ready for some time in expectation of bis announcement

Twelve employers of Maori apprentices have agreed to release them from work for two days to get the foundation completed so that the shell of the building will be available as a store during the opening of the carved meeting house in a fortnight. The building will be of concrete masonry blocks and the suppliers have made a gift of £lOO toward the cost.
