ARTS ADVISORY COUNCIL NAMED
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 18. The Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Anderton) today announced the appointment of an Arts Advisory Council within the Internal Affairs Department. The council will comprise the Minister as chairman, the Secretary for Internal Affairs (Mr J. V. Meeoh), who will be deputychairman, five non-Government members, the Director of Broadcasting (Mr J. H. E. Schroder) and the Director of Education (Mr A. E. Campbell). The non-Government members are Dr. J. C. Beaglehole, research fellow and lecturer in colonial history at Victoria University; Mr D. S. Campbell, former president of the British Drama League; Mr J. Collins, associate director of the New Zealand Opera Company and president of the Christchurch Operatic Society; Mr K. H. Melvin, lecturer in education at the University of Otago; and Mr F. Turnovsky. chairman of directors of the New Zealand Opera Company and founder and former president of the Federation of Chamber Music Societies.
“In selecting these non-Govern-ment members I have looked for a wide interest in the arts generally, rather than a specialised knowledge of one, and an appreciation of the difficulties, particula'rly financial ones, that face the arts today. It am satisfied that the men I have selected, together with the departmental members, will bring a breadth of knowledge
and experience to their task,” Mr Anderton said. The council will be charged with administering the special fund of £60.000 recently established by the Government, and with the formulation and implementation of an oxer-all policy of encouragement and assistance to the arts.
The creation of this special fund, comprising £30,000 from surplus art union funds and £30,000 from the Consolidated Fund, was announced by the Minister of Finance (Mr Nordmeyer) in his Budget speech.
“The Government has thus recognised the necessity of stimulating greater activity in and assistance to the arts, particularly in view of the introduction of television which will present to them both opportunities and problems,” Mr Anderton said. “The establishment of the special fund, and the appointment of the council, marks a milestone in New Zealand’s cultural development. “The encouraging progress made in the arts in New Zealand over the last few years has led to a need for planning, coordination and assistance, which I hope the council will provide.”
