Lawn Tennis DAVIS CUP SQUAD
Five Australians Selected (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY. November 18. The Australian tennis selectors today named the Davis Cup squad of five members—and issued a pointed warning that misbehaviour by any of them could lead to their dismissal from the squad. The squad is N. Fraser, aged 27. R. Laver, aged 22, R. Emerson, aged 24. R. Mark, aged 23. and R. Hewitt, aged 20. The chairman of selectors (Mr Esca Stephens), reading from a prepared statement, said that selectors “reserve the right to add to the squad or delete at any time.” Asked why it was necessary to use the words “delete at any time.” Mr Stephens said: “We are hopeful of receiving the full co-operation of every member of the squad. Also, we are anxious that Australian tennis prestige should be enhanced by the conduct of players on and ofT the courts all the time.” Selectors named no-one. but Hewitt and Mark came in for criticism over their behaviour during the recent Queensland championships and the present New South Wales championships.
