ALLEGED T.A.B. BRIBE
Wider Inquiry Approved (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) PERTH. Nov. 17. The West Australian State Premier (Mr Brand) moved successfully in the Legislative Assembly last night to widen a proposed Royal Commission investigation of an alleged bribe offer to Mr R. O’Connor (Liberal, North Perth) to oppose the Government’s legislation for offcourse totalisator betting. The Royal Commissioner will n«w investigate whether any member of either House of Parliament was offered a bribe to vote against the legislation which will bring in a T.A.B. to replace licensed bookmakers’ betting shops. The Premier said the Attorney General had had discussions with the acting Chief Justice, who was opposed to the appointment of a local Judge as the Royal Commissioner. The Commissioner will be appointed by the State Cabinet. Science Officers. Officers elected at the annual general meeting of the mathematics and physics section of the Canterbury branch of the Royal Society of New Zealand were:—Chairman, Dr. A. W. Ross; committee, Messrs C. S. L. Keay, A. C. McIntyre, W. Bowen.
