Savage Given 3lb Penalty
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE, November 17. The New Zealand galloper Savage has been penalised 31b for the £3OOO Eclipse Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday for winning the Bendigo Cup yesterday. ’ His trainer, Theo Lewis, said he was surprised by the penalty but Savage would still start with his new weight of 8-9. W. Williamson, who won the Werribee and Bendigo Cups on Savaige, will ride the gelding again. Lewis said he considered Savage had enough weight with 8-6 in the Eclipse Stakes without a further penalty for winning the Bendigo Cup. Lord Sasanof galloped at Mentone today for the first time since he won the Heatherton Handicap last Saturday. Lord Sasanof showed no sign of soreness or lameness in the near hind leg, which was galloped on at Caulfield last Saturday and filled from the hock to the joint. The swelling had gone down before the gallop today but it filled again afterwards. The trainer Vic Johnson said he would have to wait to see whether Lord Sasanof could start in the Eclipse Stakes.
