CAMPAIGN TOUR

Mr Holyoake “Confident”

In Christchurch yesterday to make his fifteenth election speech, and with another seven scheduled before November 26. the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Holyoake) said he had found on his tour so far that attendances had been better than he had expected, and generally better than in 1957.

“I am quietly confident,” he said when asked what impression he had gained during the tour which has taken him from Auckland to InvercargillBut no-one could predict the influence of Social Credit, he admitted. “Just where the votes will go that they got last time, or in 1954. is not known,” he said

There had been interjections at his meetings, but nowhere had they been angry or antagonistic ones, he said. He had welcomed many of them which had. enlivened the meetings, and thanked several of the inlerjectors for their efforts. Just at the start of the campaign he had had some slight discomfort with his voice. Mr Holyoake said, but now he was completely untroubled. His speech in Christchurch last evening left no doubt that he was in good speaking form.

Nor was the travelling, rush and bustle of the campaign and attending to a multitude of matters outside his normal work worrying him, Mr Holyoake said. He welcomed the opportunity of meeting again the men and women who were his colleagues in the campaign, and also of meeting the people who attended the meetings. From Christchurch today Mr Holyoake will go to Timaru to speak there this evening before returning to the North Island-, where he will have a further meeting in Auckland, meetings on ’he East Coast, and end his camoaign in Dannevirke, which is in his home electorate of Pahiatua.
