FIREMEN’S DISPUTE
“Justifiable” Action
The partial strike action taken by Christchurch firemen in order to obtain a national award providing for uniform conditions of employment is “justifiable,” the Canterbury-district council of the Federation of Labour has decided. The council met for two hours yesterday afternoon to consider the present dispute. “Having regard to the differences between the parties, we believe that with a measure of goodwill and common sense by both parties, matters can soon be resolved.” said Mr C. R. Thomas, the council’s secretary, yesterday
“We understand that on a previous occasion, it took the parties three years to agree on an award, and we concur with the Canterbury Fire Brigades’ Union that this should not be allowed to happen this time,” Mr Thomas said.
Mr G. G. Walker, president of the union, who attended the council meeting, said that he was most pleased with the attentive hearing the firemen’s case had been given.
