TRAWLING BY JAPANESE
Large Boat Off Northland
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 17.
Japanese trawlers fishing off the New Zealand coast continue to arouse the ire of local fishing companies and trawler skippers. A large motor trawler, the Taiyo Maru No 61. was observed and photographed from the air today as it slowly trawled between 11 and 12 miles due west of Muriwai beach.
“They are getting cheekier and cheekier,” said Mr R. M. Brebner, a spokesman for Sanford, Ltd. “They have been known to fish between our ships and the shore and trawl in and out among the local boats. “So far.” he said, “no-one has yet been able to see them bringing in their trawls. They must be taking just about everything that swims ”
Mr Brebner said he thought the Japanese did not want the local I fishermen to see the size of the mesh in their nets
“They always wait until ‘he coast is clear before lifting them,” Ihe said.
