Trend
About 100 cabinet-making factories in Christchurch are now at work producing furniture sold not only within the urban area but also in many other parts of New Zealand. The bulk of design is leaning towards the contemporary with wide use of plastic, wrought iron and blond woods.
Formal suites are in the minority and square shapes are being preferred to ovals or circles (as in mirrors for example). Greater use is being made of solid timber rather than veneers.
Rubber and unit springing is now trade practice for upholstery, which is . more comfortable than it ever used to be.
An exception is the club chair which is showing a revival in both original hide and colourful plastics.
