Fire Evacuation Test
The department store of the New Zealand Fanners’ Co-opera-tive Association Company, I4d„ in Cashel street, was cleared -of customers and staff in three minutes when a trial fire evacuation was carried out yesterday. There was no panic and the evacuation iwas carried out in an orderly manner. The test was carried out soon after the doors were opened to customers and three minutes later both customers and staff were standing in the "safe" area across the road. The trial was held with; out warning. Some 450 to 500 persons were in the building when the alarm sounded. The lift was stopped and the staff helped to lift prams and pushchairs down the stairs.
As the cellar, ground, first and second floors were cleared a disc went on a shadow board in the shop’s foyer. The building was reoccupied after the last disc went up.
The three-minute time was very good but about average for the firm, said Mr W. J. Taylor, the inspecting officer for the Fire Brigade.
