RICCARTON ROAD TRAFFIC
Lights Proposed By
Council
The Riccarton Borough Council on Monday evening asked its town clerk (Mr R. Sarjeant) to prepare a report covering types costs of installation of traffic lights at the intersection of Riccarton road with Clarence and Straven streets.
The move was opposed by Cr. G. A. Franks. He said the parking restrictions introduced with the lights would mean the loss of space for about 20 cars in one of the busiest parts of the borough. The £2OOO to be charged to the council was too much considering 80 per cent, of the traffic was “through traffic,” he said. The council resolved several months ago to put in the 'lights providing there was a subsidy from the National Roads Board, said the Mayor (Mr E. J. Bradshaw). The corner needed some sort of light control, he said.
