VATICAN VISIT CRITICISED

Views Of Church

Society

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, Nov. 15.

The Church Society, an Anglican organisation, has criticised the Archbishop of Canterbury’s forthcoming visit to Pope John. The society, a “low church” body which seeks to preserve Protestant worship within the Church of England said that Dr. Geoffrey Fisher’s visit, while a private one, would probably "increase the growing tensions within the Church of England itself.” The society hoped that the Archbishop would express its disappointment at the “narrow exclusiveness’ ’ Which prevented Roman Catholics from worshipping with other Christians and which opposed mixed marriages. The society said the Archbishop should make it clear that, though the Church of Rome did not recognise the orders of the Church of England, he would meet the Pope on equal terms.
