Veteran Hammer Thrower

At 44 toe 1950 Empire Games hammer thrower, John Brown, must still be among the best hammer throwers in the country, although he does not now give nearly as much time to this event as he did a few years ago. In his first competition of toe season at Rugby Park last Saturday, Brown won the senior A hammer throw with a distance of 133 ft Ilin,

This is well below his best of more than 157 ft recorded in a contest with another Empire Games representative, Arthur Fuller, for the Canterbury title some years ago, but he should be able to improve on this as the season progresses and it would not surprise to see him appear on the New Zealand ranking list of the best 10 performers at the end of toe season.

Apart from Duncan Clark, the former Scottish representative. Brown has had a hand in toe training of all toe New Zealand champions of recent years and it is in helping younger athletes to develop skill that he probably derives most satisfaction. Several young athletes are being advised by Brown and it would not surprise to see Canterbury regain the status of being toe leading hammer throwing province, a position it held when it still had the services of such men as Dave Leech, now Auckland, and Max Carr, now Wellington.
