Hagley Beats Monowai A

The highlight of women’s softball games on Saturday was the meeting of Hagley with last year’s New Zealand champion side, MonowaiA. Hagley, after holding a narrow lead from the second innings, completely upset Monowai A. Hagley, after holdto go into a comfortable lead which Monowai A at no stage appeared able to overhaul. In an exciting game, Teachers’ College just managed to hold off an improved Monowai B side, while Christchurch easily held Kaiapoi. Results:— Hagley 7, Monowai A 0. Teachers’ College 2, Monowai B 1. Christchurch 31, Kaiapoi 13. Hagley v. Monowai A Monowai A’s B. Makinson started with a hard drive gained first base. She went to second base on a hit by J. Cameron with one away, but a catch and a force out held the side scoreless. Hagley was three up, three down to two good catches by C. Brown and a strike out. In its second innings Monowai A’s L. Leask was walked to first base with two away. She advanced to second base on a hit by C. Brown, but the side was away to a good catch by Joan Irving.

Hagley replied with its first batter at third on errors. With one batter away to a strike out Hagley scored on a fielder’s choice before a force out retired the side. Monowai A was scoreless with runners on In its third innings and Hagley was away to two strike outs and a force out. Two catches and a force out held Monowai A three up, three down in its next innings arid Hagley in reply, failed with runners on. Both teams were three up, three down in the fifth innings and Monowai A was out to the same count in the next innings. Hagley replied and, with one away, strong batting by J. Gaskell and Janice Irving forced the Monowai A fielders into errors for six runs before the third out was taken.

Monowai A, trailing by seven runs, was held scoreless once more by steady fielding, allowing Hagley to record a shut out win without batting its last innings. Superior fielding by Hagley was the deciding factor in the game. B. Stratford started Teachers’ College’s first innings in grand style with a two base hit, and she advanced to third and home* on a folder’s choice. Monowai B was tnree up, three down. Both teams were held at this score by good fielding in the second innings. In the next innings Monowai B’s J. Potts gained first on a hit and went to second and third on a fielder’s choice. She scored on a hit by C. Tennent and the side failed to increase Its score with runners on.

Teachers’ College was scoreless in reply. Two catches and a tag out held Monowai B scoreless in its fourth innings and Teachers’ College went into the lead when J. McMillan drove in a run.

Monowai B was held scoreless with loaded bases on its fifth try by steady fielding. Teachers’ College was held three up, three down in its fifth and sixth innings. Monowai B was again scoreless with runners on. With Teachers’ College three Up, three down in its last innings Monowai B tried desperately to even the score, but because of good fielding was held scoreless with a runner on for Teachers’ College to win after an exciting game, 2-1. Kaiapoi In a high scoring game Christchurch had little difficulty in beating an improving Kaiapql team, 31-13. The more experienced Christchurch team, with steadier fielding and strong batting, went into the lead in the first Innings by four runs and held Kaiapoi scoreless until the third, when, with flood hits by W. Mcllwrick and J. Green. Kaiapoi was able to score four runs to tie the score.

Christchurch replied with strong batting. Including a two base hit by H. Johnson for four runs. Kaiapoi almost drew level in the fourth innings with hits by M. Hopkins and H. Bayliss bringing in three runs. Christchurch replied, batting strongly to all parts of the diamond, to add seven runs to its total. Kaiapoi brought in another three runs in its fifth innings and held Christchurch scoreless in reply. Kaiapoi again scored three runs in its next innings and Christchurch put on batting pressure in reply to score 15 runs. Struck By Car—A pedestrian. Mr Ross Alder, of 171 Langdons road, Papenui, suffered shock when he was struck by a car in Papanui road, near Harewood road, late on Saturday morning. He was treated at the casualty department of the Christchurch HoepitaS and sent home.
