STUDENTS BATTLE AT UNIVERSITY
Elections For Rector At Edinburgh (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) EDINBURGH, November 11. Rival student factions met in a traditional pitched battle in Edinburgh yesterday during elections for the university’s next rector.
Medical students supporting the Canadian newspaper proprietor, Mr Roy Thomson, clashed with students from the Faculty of Arts, who support the British Liberal Party leader, Mr Jo Grimond.
The battling students bombarded each other with bags of soot and flour, threw fireworks and tore each other’s clothing to shreds.
The present rector, the actor James Robertson Justice, was elected in November, 1957.
