ATHLETICS Good Half-Mile By G. Hack

The Canterbury half-mile shampion. G. Hack, is determined to do well in an invitation race against the Olympic gold medallist, P. Snell, of Auckland, at Lower Hutt in two weeks’ time and his time of 1:56.5 for the 800 yards at the inter-club athletic meeting at Rugby Park on Saturday suggested that Hack will be in good form for

the‘clash. Hack won his race very comfortably against opponents who tried unsuccessfully to equal the leader’s fast pace in the last lap. Hack had too much stamina over the last 300 yards, and although B. Smith (Technical) kept much of his early speed he was second by more than 10 yards in 1:59.6. Smith’s time was still good for a B grade runner and he should soon be eligible to take part in the A grade race. As has been the case this season, Miss Chamberlain ran in the men's half mile and returned 2:12.4, which was .4 better than her New Zealand record. But she will not be able to claim the record as the conditions of the race precluded any recognition. J. D. Macdonald (University) was in lively form in the three miles and his win in 14:44.0 gave him a win by more than 100 yards. Macdonald cleared out in the early stages and lap after lap .increased his lead from a field which soon lost any enthusiasm for a fast pace. The only other runners who impressed were K. Richards (Olympic) and W. Kennedy (Polytechnic). Steeplechase

A. Bayard (Anglican), the Canterbury junior cross-country champion, won the 1500 metres steeplechase in 4:37.7 from T. Bennett (Anglican) and C. Wood (New Brighton) and P. J. H. Hewlett (Christ’s College) was a comfortable winner in the junior mile in 4:34.7. A. Dyer (Rangiora), in second place, kept reasonably close to Hewlett for three laps, but the long-striding Hewlett pulled away in the last lap and won going away.

The versatile M. Walls (Toe H) won the under 17 high jump with a height of sft Bin, the. 100 yards in 10.7, and was a close second in the 120 yards hurdles to A. Gebbie (Christ’s College). The evergreen, J. Brown (Technical), made an appearance in the hammer throw and threw the excellent distance of 133 ft Ilin. Brown, aged 44, has seldom thrown further at this stage of the season, but after his event he said he did not intend to take the sport too seriously this year R. Ball (University) galloped furiously over the 120 yards hurdles and knocked down two and touched them all but one in what appeared to be a grand assault on the obstacles. He was second, but only just, in a closelycontested race. R. Burgess (University) found the track to his liking and won the 75 yards in the good time of 7.8, and the 220 yards in 22.8. He was not troubled in either race and it is unfortunate that Canterbury will be unable to call on his services next year. Abbreviations in the results are:— Toe H (T.H.), University (U.).
