N.Z. SCOTTISH SOCIETY

Concert And Dance

There were ho dour Scots at the fifty-eighth annual gathering of the clans and concert of the New Zealand Scottish Society. Dried heather was given out at the door and with the many kilts swirling around nobody bred north of the border would have felt out of place. The 300 persons present were welcomed by the society’s chief, Mr A. Grey, who also acted as compere for the concert Others in the official party, which was piped into the hall, were the chief of the Ashburton Scottish Society, D. MacPherson, senior chieftian T. A. Gordon, chieftian A. Galt and Cr. W. S. Mac Gibbon as a special guest. The concert, which occupied most of the evening, was notable for several excellent performers. Among them was Mr R Meilis on the piano accordion who had played in a command performance “in the Old Country,” and six-year-old Judith Burrows who danced the Gillie Callum with remarkable ease and confidence.

MrC. Campbell, also on a piano accordion, infected the audience with his good spirits and soon had them tapping the floor in time with the tune and joining in with tbe more popular melodies Other items included dancing, and solos which were accompanied by Mrs W E. Olds on the SdTa eVening
