G. MANDER'S FINE PERFORMANCE

R-Glass Win In Harbour Event

Conditions were so changeable on Lyttelton Harbour on Saturday afternoon that racing yachts were able to carry spinnakers on each leg of a triangular course.

In the flukey conditions it was spinnaker work that counted and crews who set or hauled in at the wrong time were the ones who dropped behind. A skilful exhibition was given by G. Mander in his R Class Frenzy. With J. Simpson as for’ard hand he showed his class by taking the speedy Flying Dutchman Van Tromp (J. Morrison) which should have been streets ahead.

Mander not only finished first but turned in such a good time that he won the event on handicap. The competition was the first of three races for the Henderson Cup. The cup is an R class competition for which Van Tromp is not eligible.

The event was sailed by the Canterbury Yacht Club from Erskine Point. The course was from the point to the tripod mark off the reclamation, to Church Bay and Quail Island and once more round. Frenzy crept past the Dutchman in idle conditions two thirds of the way round the course for the first time.

As the wind increased Van Tromp regained its front position and came home Imin 3sec ahead of Frenzy, which qutclassed the rest. Fresco was the only other boat that impressed. It was sailed by the smooth combination, B. Treleaven and M. Sei wood, and looked on the day at any rate to be the sole craft thjit might possibly have seriously challenged Mander.

Treleaven and Mander were ofl the same mark, scratch, but the latter finished Imin 21sec in front. Results, showing handicaps and corrected finishing times, were as follows : ’

Frenzy (G. Mander), scr, 4.20.2, 1; Result (G. Good), 2min, 4:20.9. 2: Fresco (B. Treleaven), scr, 4:21.23, 3; Impetuous (B. Wall), I.smin, 4:23.9, 4; Sari (F. Simpson.), I.smin, 4:27.27, 5; Vision (A. Shields), 2min, 4:29.19. 6; Pirouette (H. England). 3min. 4:32.0, 7.
