MACKAY AIR CRASH
Altimeter Change
Wanted
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE, November 11.
The board inquiring into the crash of a Fokker Friendship aircraft off Mackay, Queensland, last June was told yesterday that airline pilots would like the altimeter system in the aircraft changed. Mr A. D. Pearce, for the Australian Federation of Airline Pilots, said the federation wanted the board to make recommendations about the system. He said pilots wanted two separate altimeters fitted in aircraft working on different principles. Mr Pearce said it was possible that water in the instrument of the Fokker Friendship caused an error of 1009 ft in the altimeter before the June 10 crash. “There is no evidence to indicate that the pilot contributed in any way to the accident,” he said. The inquiry report will be submitted to the Minister of Civil Aviation.
