LABOUR PARTY LEADERSHIP
Brown Deputy To Gaitskell (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON. Nov. 10. Mr George Brown, M.P., aged 44. Labour defence spokesman, was tonight elected deputy leader of the Labour Party, bringing Mr Hugh Gaitskell a stron ally in his fight to retain control of the feuding, Socialist movement. In a secret ballot of the Labour Members of Parliament, Mr Brown beat Mr Fred Lee, M.P., by 146 votes to 83. Mr Brown, like Mr Gaitskell, is a staunch supporter of collective nuclear defence.
Twenty-five Labour M.P.s abstained from the vote—an indication of the doubt and uncertainty still dominating the party on leadership issues.
