NO CONTROLS ON FISH PRICES
Minister’s Suggestion For “Arrangement”
(New Zealand Preu Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 3.
The Minister of Industriee and Commerce (Mr Holloway) said today that it was not proposed to apply control to fish prices at present. Although retail prices for fish increased appreciably over the years immediately after they were decontrolled early in 1950. a recent survey showed that since the beginning of 1958 they have remained relatively constant, he said. This indicated that the industry generally had exerted a “tempering influence.” An exhaustive survey of the pricing structure in the Industry, in the light of price increases since 1950. suggested that the chief reason for such increases was that the public was concentrating its demands upon a more limited range of popular fish, and was demanding that this must be in a more advanced state of preparation for cooking, thus involving retailers in relatively higher handling costs.
Under the circumstances, said Mr Holloway, it was thought that instead of instituting an immediate control of flsh prices, negotiations might be opened with the industry for some suitable voluntary arrangement to ensure that certain varieties of fish at lower prices would be available.
