COMMANDING IN MISHAP
Decision On Start This Morning
Commanding, the early favourite for the Welcome Stakes at Riccarton today, lost skin off his hind legs in a float mishap on the way from Lyttelton on Wednesday.
Commanding showed no signs of soreness after working at Ricearton yesterday morning, but his owner, Mr G. S. Walton, said Commanding’s condition this morning will determine whether he runs in the Welcome Stakes. Commanding, Vitapointe, Fils d’Or and Red Signal were all involved in the incident, which occurred as the float rounded a bend on the Sumner side of the Evans Pass road.
' Vitapointe took fright as the float rounded a bend and got down. The other horses panicked and also came down.
Fight On was also in the float, but he stayed on his feet.
Vitapointe, which got right down on her back, was saved from serious injury only by the thick, bandages she was wearing.
