S.A. Censors To Get Copy CAPE TOWN. November 3 An unexpurgated copy of D. H Lawrence’s “Lady Chatterley’s Lover” was reported to be on its way to South Africa by air today It will go straight to the censors. Penguin Books are hoping to get the novel cleared in South Africa and the Rhodesian Federation as a result of the London Court decision, the American Associated Press reported The chairman of the Union’s censorship board. Mr N J le Roux, commented today: “We are expecting it.”
The novel is not on th UnJon’s list of banned books, probably because it has not been available for consideration. This means anyone can get the book posted direct from London. If banning then took place they would have to destroy it or face a fine of up to £lOOO for possessing it.
The expurgated version is on sale in South Africa but another version. “The Second Lady Chatterley," is banned. A Cape Town publisher’s representative. Mr Howard Timmins, said he thought the sales might reach 30.000 in South Africa if the censors let it through.
In Malaya. a Ministry of Interior spokesman said entry of the controversial novel was under consideration. The unexpurgated American version is already on sale but an order for 20.000 copies of the Penguin paperback has been placed. Penguin Books . eadqvarters at Harmondswofth. south of London. was working overtime tonight getting off the fir t IOOIFO copies of the novel, the ‘‘Evening Standard" reported Red-labelled “urgent" and nacked into cartons of 100, the Chatterleys. as they are called at Penguins, were loaded on to passenger trains in London for booksellers in the west of England. Scotland and the North Country Next Thursday is the date for the first nglish publication of the book in an uncut version since it was written
