PURGE OF PARTY
East German Plans BERLIN. November 4. East Germany last night announced a purge of the Communist Party to combat political unrest and economic failures. British United Press reported. The central committee ordered all 1,700.000 party members to turn in their membership books and submit to a check before getting new ones.
A central committee announcement said the check would be carried out between December 1 and January 31. All members were ordered to attend two extraordinary meetings of local party organisations to prove their right to continued membership. The central committee said the action would strengthen the party in its fight to fulfil the seven-year economic plan, to build socialism, to fight West German militarism, to tighten links with the masses, and increase “democratic centralism.” “Democratic centralism" is the Communist term for obedience to the decisions of party leaders.
It' is considered certain that many followers of provincial leaders already dismissed will now be dropped from the party. B.U.P. said.
