Riccarton Trial For N.Z. Cup

Port Wine showed a high standard of fitness for tomorrow’s New Zealand Cup when he ran the best mile in training at Riccarton yesterday. The Woodville stayer had Summer Glory, a New Zealand Cup light-weight, and Whiohau as companions but neither could match his solid run over the concluding stages of the gallop. McCool made a sound solo run over the same distance and other New Zealand Cup candidates shaped well were Water Boy, Quite Able and Foglia d’Oro.

Fountainhead was again the most brilliant over half a mile and Huka Falls also showed good speed to shade Fairassan in a fast run over the same distance.

Welcome Stakes candidates which galloped with zest were Cavalier, Stella Alpina and Gay Ribbon.

Most of the fast work was held on the course proper which provided firm footing. The trestles were out about 27 feet.

Port Wine (R. J. Skelton) and Summer Glory (R. N. Marsh) worked away from the 10 furlong start and were joined at the mile by Whiohau (R. W. Gould). . The three of them ran in line . for the next three furlongs but Whiohau was beginning to feel the strain before the half-mile and started to drift

Summer Glory held Port Wine to a neck till the last furlong but he began to draw away closer to home and was widening a gap of four lengths at every stride as they reached the post. Port Wine ran the last mile In Imin 44sec and each half took 52sec.

The two-year-old Donfair CD. J. Wyatt) dashed home from the half-mile in 49 4-ssec. He is being reserved for the later days. _ Derailment (G. W. Mein) and Newmarket (J. Leach) led Stradbroke (R. W. Gould) by half a length ending seven furlongs in Imin 33 l-ssec. They ran the first furlong in 14 4-ssec and the first three in 40sec. Derby Candidate

The New Zealand Derby candidate, Chatsmore (P. Hemi) was abreast of his stablemate Challen <D. J. Wyatt) finishing a sound run over a mile in Imin 44 l-ssec. The first half-mile in 51 l-ssec was the fastest. Packwood (W. D. Skelton) ran his first three furlongs in 40 3-ssec and completed seven in Imin 31 4-ssec. Matauwhi (P. J. Kempton) and Tamarisk (R. W. Gould) ran the last mile of 10 furlongs in I JP i “, 48 l-ssec, quickening i slightly over the final half in 51 3-ssec. They were together . throughout Omaha (C. abreast at the end of their half- - mile in 49 3-ssec. They are lightweight rivals in the Stewards’ Handicap. Pace Increased . Westbound <R. W. Taylor) and Aquinas (F. H. Skelton) took Imin 22 l-ssec to run six furlongs. The pace increased over the last halfmile in 50 4-ssec. ’ Piertght (W. D. Skelton) was too smart for five rivals over six furlongs. Balrannach (W. Beck) and Studio '. <K. Reggett) were abreast and - clear of Regal Zorra (G. W. Mein) at the end of a mile in Imin 48 4-5 sec. the last half in 52 4-ssec. Water Boy (C. T. Wilson) and ... Quite Able (J. T. Anderson) led Rustic (L. J. Ellis) by a length and *- a half after running the last mile r of 10 furlongs in Imin 46 l-ssec. The final half-mile took 50 4-ssec. Eastwood) led • her stablemate Burgos (B. S. Dodds) by a length and a half at the finish of half a mile in 49sec. Gay Ribbon could prove a worthy rival for the northern two-year-olds in the Weis' come Stakes. Ruve (R. B. Taggart) ended her * mile three lengths ahead of Cheyenne (W. Hanlin) after taking Imin 46 4 6sec for the distance and 51 2-ssec for the last half-mile. Ruve • has been shaping well in her latest gallops and could race well in the Riccarton Handicap. r- King Lyn (P- J. Kempton) and - My Fair Lady (C. T. Wilson) did « not have to do their best to leave . half a mile behind in S 3 2-Ssec. Lord Nikita Shaded Paua (N. Eastwood) was shading Lord Nikita (J- T. Anderson) at the end of six furlongs in Imin 21 4-5 sec, the last half-mile tn 53 2-ssec. Forsythe (N. Eastwood) outfinished Hand Over (R. B. Taggart) by a neck with four lengths to Flagon (T. McGill) and a slightly longer gap to Jimmy Hill (W, Hanlin) after a mile in Imin 45 2-ssec. The last half-mile was run in 52 3-ssec. , Belfast (R. W. Taylor) trailed , Foglia d'Oro (W. D. Skelton) by two - lengths over the last half-mile of their mile in Imin 47 2-ssec. Foglia d’Oro worked ahead and stayed in r front after the first four furlongs * in 56sec. Blue Lodge (J. T. Anderson) did not have to be bustled to lead his stablemate Le Don (R. I. Thompson) by two lengths at the end of seven furlongs in Imin 33 3-ssec, the final four in Whir Blue Lodge has thrived at Biec art on and is in solid condition for his test in the New Zealand Derby. Ricardo (J. P. Riordan) showed

good speed in a sprint down the straight from the three furlongs in 36sec. His stablemate, Rochdale, with the same rider up, took 42sec for a similar task.

Rochdale appeared to be more interested in his strange surroundings than the task of raising a strong gallop. These Te Awamutu stablemates will form a formidable bracket in the Stewards* Handicap. Karenza Marie (W. Humphries) was not required to do better than 52 3-sec for her half-mile. She has dropped out of the Spring Plate in which she drew very wide. Huka Falls (R. W. Taylor) sped over half a mile with Fairassan (W. D. Skelton) in 47 l-ssec, and had a slight advantage at the end. It was a sound trial for the Stewards' Handicap.

Page Boy (J. T. Anderson) sped home from the half-mile in 49 4-5 sec. He is not as well seasoned as some of his Stewards* Handicap rivals but seems to have done plenty of work Just the same. McGregor (J. Wells) and Marlow (R. J. Skelton) did well to leave half a mile behind in 48 4-ssec. Vestment Lady (R. W. Taylor) ran her first three furlongs in 39sec and completed seven in Imin 29 l-ssec. It was the best gallop over the distance.

Carbonett (R. N*. Marsh) showed that she is fit for her Riccarton Handicap test tomorrow when she dashed over the last four of five furlongs Jn 49 4-ssec.

Rye (D. J. Wyatt) led Thumper (B. W. McDonald) by a neck after an easy seven furlongs in Imin 37 sec. The pace was stepped up over the last half-mile In 51 2-ssec. Texarkana (J. P. Riordan) ran the last four of five furlongs in 51 3-5 sec. He was a minor place-getter in the hack sprint at Tauranga last Saturday when making a fresh start. Roman Maid (R. J. Skelton) sped over her first furlong in 11 4-ssec and left five behind in Imin 1 2-5 sec. She .is in grand order for the Stewards’ Handicap. Worked Strongly

Oreka (R. J. Bain) worked strongly over 10 furlongs and was keen to increase the pace all the way. His last mile took Imin 50 2-5 sec and he was allowed to lengthen stride a bit over the final half in 54 2-ssec.

Bellarook (L. M. Casey) dashed home from the half-mile in 49sec. He is a light-weight prospect for the Stewards’ Handicap. Quick Time (B. W. McDonald) and Kelp (B. S. Finlayson) were not out to make time but worked soundly over a mile and a half. They ran the last 10 furlongs in 2min 22 2-ssec, but were allowed to stretch out over the last half-mile in 51 2-ssec. Blonde Sprite (F. H. Skelton) shaded Search Warrant (N. T. Cowles) after an easy seven furlongs in Imin 37 2-ssec, the last halfmile in 53 4-ssec. Becharre (R. J. Skelton) ran a solo mile in Imin 47sec. She kept an even pace throughout, coming home from the half-mile in 53sec. McCool (C. McDonald) did well to run a solo mile in Imin 44 1-5 sec, the last half in 51 l-ssec. He worked more freely and hit out better than on Tuesday. McCool was scratched for the Riccarton Handicap yesterday. Gay Filou (K. Reggett) led Balance (F. H. Skelton) by a length and a half and Chance Encounter (L. M. Casey) was beaten off at the end of seven furlongs in Imin 30 3-ssec, the last half-mile In 51 3-ssec.

The New Zealand Cup top-weight. Desert Chief, was again let off with two rounds of pacework on the plough. The only fast work he has done since Motukarara was a three furlong sprint in 37sec on the plough on Wednesday morning.
