“Soviet Demands Bullying”
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LAGOS (Nigeria), November 2. The Prime Minister of Nigeria said today Nigeria would "not be bullied by Soviet demands to open a Russian Embassy. Alhaji Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa told a news conference, the leader of the Soviet delegation to Nigeria’s independence celebrations last month. Mr Jakob Malik, had given him a letter from the Soviet Premier (Mr Khrushchev) which had ’ "insisted on opening an embassy forthwith.”
“I told him protocol must be followed, and we would consider toe application in the proper form. We are dealing with applications in due order in accordance with Nigerian interests.” Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa said he despised threats, and would never be oullied. He would always welcome criticism and advice, but never dictation.
