Mr Nash Resents Attacks
(New Zealand Press Association) HUNTLY, November 2.
The Prime Minister (Mr Nash) told a press conference ip Huntly tonight that he was “really saddened” to hear the leader of the National Party (Mr Holyoake) in his opening broadcast “using the technique of casting doubt on his opponents’ honour and integrity.” Mr Nash said he did. not mind criticism,, but he objected to being called a liar and to having his honesty impugned. There was no need for terms such as "deliberate deception,”, “humbug,” “fooling the people,” “bribery.’’ and “buying votes.” - Mr Nash said: “In Parliament we have certain admirable rules for conducting debates. The keynote is no personalities, no impugning honour, no accusations of dishonest, unworthy motives. “We do each other the honour of respecting sincerity and integrity, and T see no reason why similar rules should’ not obtain outside Parliament." Mr Nash said Mr’’ Holyoake's technique was “that- of a man feeling guilty of past errors.” “We will fight hard, but cleanly," said Mr Nash. “We have nothing to be ashamed of. I have never attacked any man's good name and-I am not going to start now. even to win an election.”
