REAR-ADMIRAL DUFEK
Appointment To Post In U.S. (Hew Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 2. Rear-Admiral George Dtifek, one of America’s foremost authorities on Arctic and Antarctic exploration and development, who retired from the United States Navy last year, has been appointed Director of the Mariners’ Museum, Newport News, Virginia. Advice of Admiral Dufek’s appointment was received in Wellington today. He commanded the United States Antarctic expedition from 1955 till 1959, and was responsible for the construction of seven bases in the Antarctic which were
used by American scientists during the International Geophysical Year, The position as director of the museum has been vacant since the death of Rear-Admiral E. W. Sylvester, U.S.N. (retd.), on August 1. Admiral Dufek will take up his new appointment on December 1. The Mariners’ Museum, which has attracted visitors from all over the world since it was founded in 1930, is dedicated to the preservation and advancement of all arts and sciences relating to the sea. It places particular emphasis on the history of American shipbuilding and its thousands of exhibits include whaling and fishing equipment, navigational gear, sailors’ tools and handiwork, life-saving and lighthouse equipment, and finely executed scale models of many famous American ships.
