Hire Purchase

Sir,—That Tom Bryce did not condemn the £lOO rebate does not surprise me. It was he who built the picture of Nationals returning the money. Well, they are returning it; and so are the Labourites, compulsorily, too. My personal refund was because I paid twice and had proof of it, and not being the capitalist that Tom Bryce has conjured up, I was glad to receive it and rather kissed the hand that fed it back. My experience goes back before 1935, when a day’s work was given for a day’s pay, the agreement being mutual, as in commercial hire purchase. The £l9 million or £2l million (give or take a million or two, nothing to me) hire purchase bid did not state terms of repayment until “Black Friday.” If Tom Bryce can give proof that the present Government has in any way benefited the wage-earner, he is cleverer than I think he is, with all his suppositions.—Yours, etc., B. CONSTANT. October 29, 1960.
