DOUBTFUL IN STEWARDS

Fountainhead Lame

A shirt for Fountainhead in the Stewards’ Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday is very much in doubt. The brilliant Takanini sprinter has (developed soreness in the near hind-leg and the seat of the trouble has not yet been found. Fountainhead has done no work since he arrived at Riccarton last Thursday. He was taken to the track for a “stretch" on Friday morning and was found to be favouring the leg after doing some light exercise. The shoe was removed when the horse returned to his stable. It did not relieve the horse’s pain tor he was still reluctant to put the hoof to the ground. It was thought that a nail had pricked the hoof but Fountainhead was examined by a veterinary surgeon and there was no sign of inflamation in the area. The hoof and leg have been constantly bathed throughout the week-end but hopes of a start for him on Saturday were not high yesterday. No definite decision will be made until Fountainhead’s trainer, G. W. B. Greene, arrives at Riccarton this morning.
