DRAINAGE IN HEATHCOTE
Council Asks How
Money Spent
The Heathcote County Council will ask the Christchurch Drainage Board how it spends the money the county pays for land drainage. This was decided at last evening’s meeting of the council after a letter from the board had been considered. The board had told the council it was still not in a position to give its plans for land drainage in the Curries road-Port Hills road-Chapmans road area. The board had an application for other urgent land and stormwater drainage work declined by the Loans Board, the council was told. The prospects of the board undertaking land drainage work of any major capital nature appeared remote, the letter said. Or. C. D. I - Comte said the drainage board was taking rates from the county “but they are certainly not spending the money in the county. “I am not at all satisfied on this.” he said. The county clerk (Mr R. W. Morris) said this year £4500 was going to the board from the county for land drainage. “They have cleaned one or two drains and that is about all,” he sjid. The county chairman (Mr R A. Young) said: “If we are paying £4500 a year we should know how it is being spent It is a sizeable amount for a county this size.” The council will seek a statement from the board on how much money has been spent on land drainage work in the county.
